Why is your Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) relatively high?

We have noticed that Jolipet's RDA for small dogs is often significantly higher than that of other freshfrozen products on the market, especially when compared to products from the Netherlands. The difference compared to other products is often more than 50%. For large dogs, our RDA is comparable.

The difference is due to the method of calculating the RDA, not the food itself.
For raw food, a rule of thumb is often used in the Netherlands: RDA = 2-3% of body weight; 2% for non-active dogs, 3% for active dogs. In the Scandinavian countries, even 5% sled dogs are used.

This rule has the advantage of being practical for the consumer but does not take into account 2 important factors:

  • Not all foods contain the same number of calories: the more energy the food contains (which often means more fat in the food), the less a dog should receive for the same level of activity; and vice versa.
  • Small dogs need more food as a percentage of body weight than large dogs. With a general rule for dogs of all breeds, the RDA for small dogs will always be too low.

There is also another way to calculate the RDA, using a formula used by all nutritionists that takes into account % moisture, % fat, % protein, % carbohydrates and % crude fibre. This formula is also used to calculate Jolipet's RDA. You can do this as follows.

Step 1: Calculate the carbohydrate content of the diet.
Look on the package for the content of moisture, crude protein (RE), crude fat (RV), crude fibre (RC), crude ash (RA) and calculate the carbohydrate content (OK) by the simple calculation: OK = 100-Vocht-RE-RV-RC Crude Ash. Attached is a numerical example:

Step 2: Calculate the amount of energy from the power supply.

Multiply RE, RH, OK and RC by the Atwater factors as shown below. This gives you the amount of energy (in kJ / 100g power supply) in the power supply.

Step 3: Calculate the RDA.

For a dog with an average daily activity (DER-multiple = ~1.6), you can use the following formula: (460* weight0.75 / energy value) * 100.
In our example, with a dog with a target weight of 10 kg, we arrive at an RDA of about 400 gr.

We found that the nutrionist formula, which was originally used to calculate the RDA for dry foods, still does not adequately account for the very high digestibility of freshfrozen foods (despite the use of modified Atwater factors).

Practical tests have shown that a 15% reduction in RDAs from the adult dog formula is appropriate. When we apply this 15% to the RDA of Jolipet, we obtain the nutritional tables as you can read them on the packaging.
